Sitting at approximately 2,750 metres above sea level along the banks of the Lachen Chu river, this small Bhutia settlement has long served as the last major halt before the extraordinary high-altitude lakes and valleys of North Sikkim. Travellers who make the journey here are rewarded with one of India's most staggering natural landscapes — a place where yaks graze on open meadows, glacial rivers thunder through deep gorges, and the night sky is so clear that constellations feel close enough to touch.
Despite its growing popularity among adventure travellers, Lachen has held on to its authentic character. The village follows the Dzumsa system — a centuries-old self-governing institution unique to North Sikkim — and the community's relationship with the land remains one of deep respect and careful stewardship.

Gurudongmar Lake
At 5,430 metres, Gurudongmar is one of the highest lakes in the world and one of the most sacred in Sikkim. Revered by Buddhists and Hindus alike, its partially frozen glacial waters leave most visitors completely speechless.
Chopta Valley
Often called the Valley of Flowers of North Sikkim, Chopta Valley bursts into colour during spring. Alpine meadows carpeted with primulas and poppies stretch between steep mountain walls — superb for high-altitude trekking.
Lachen Monastery
Perched on a ridge above the village, this Nyingma-style monastery offers sweeping views down the Lachen Chu valley. A living place of worship for the local Bhutia community and a quiet sanctuary for visiting travellers.
Thangu Valley
Halfway between Lachen and Gurudongmar, Thangu is a wide open valley that feels like the edge of the known world. Yaks wander freely across this high-altitude plain where silence is broken only by wind and birdsong.
Lachen Chu Riverside

How to Reach Lachen
Lachen is located approximately 117 kilometres north of Gangtok — the state capital and the practical starting point for any journey into North Sikkim. The road winds through Chungthang, passing alongside the roaring Teesta river before climbing sharply into the upper valleys. The drive typically takes five to six hours.
Most travellers visit Lachen as part of a combined North Sikkim package that also includes Lachung and Yumthang Valley. A standard itinerary covers three to four nights — one in Lachen for the Gurudongmar excursion, and one or two in Lachung for Yumthang and Zero Point.
The nearest airport is Pakyong Airport near Gangtok. Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal is the main international gateway, from where taxis run regularly to Gangtok. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest major railway station.
Private cabs booked through registered Sikkim tour operators are the only practical mode of transport to Lachen — there are no regular bus services into the restricted zone. Your operator will typically arrange the Restricted Area Permit as part of the package.
Altitude Acclimatisation — A Word of Caution
Gurudongmar Lake sits at over 5,400 metres — higher than most travellers will have been before. Even visitors who feel perfectly healthy in Gangtok or Lachen can experience acute mountain sickness at this elevation. Spend at least one full night acclimatising in Lachen before attempting the excursion. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and descend immediately if you develop severe headache, nausea, or breathlessness.
Best Time to Visit Lachen
Early Spring
Roads reopen after winter and rhododendrons begin blooming lower down. Gurudongmar may still be partially inaccessible — always check road status before departing.
Peak Window
The finest time for Lachen. Clear skies, open high passes, and Chopta Valley in full bloom. Book well in advance — the most popular season in North Sikkim.
Monsoon Season
Roads to Lachen frequently wash out during monsoon. Most tour operators suspend North Sikkim packages. Travel is not advisable during these months.
Autumn Clarity
Post-monsoon skies bring exceptional clarity and dramatic mountain views. Superb for photography and the Gurudongmar excursion. Temperatures drop sharply at night.
